This American Pie zine is a commentary surrounding beauty standards. This zine tells a narrative of westernized beauty standards being force-fed onto black women while simultaneously perpetuating colorism within the black community. I want to focus on how propaganda, society, and the media influence the experiences of black women. The cherry pie being force-fed is symbolic of a false reality of the American Dream. The illustrated characters are used to personify elements of white supremacy. Some of these characters include the jigaboo which signifies anyone opposing black liberation, the white woman signifying America with a palatable presence, and the black woman whose skin is blue.
